Memory cards, card readers, and a big fat question mark?

So, I’ve stumbled across an annoying hiccup in my photo editing workflow. Three times now Lightroom has given me this rather useless error “The following files could not be opened.” It usually comes immediately after a failed import from the memory card. Fortunately I’ve been able to fix the problem through a little trial and error, but I’m not convinced I’ve reached the root of it yet.

I’ll spare you the history, but basically it boils down to this: I’ve tried importing RAW files from two different cameras (Maxxum 7D and a D200), three different memory cards (Hitachi 6GB MicroDrive, Kingston Ultimate 133x 8GB, and Sandisk Extreme IV 8GB), two different card readers (Sandisk 8-in-1, and Sandisk Extreme Firewire CF), not to mention working on a PC and a Mac. The problem is that I haven’t been able to reproduce the error with any consistency whatsoever.

Originally this post was going to be me talking about the importance of using reputable memory cards and a good reader (like Sandisk) but instead I’m calling on the wisdom of the blogosphere to see if anyone can shed some light on this. My hunch initially was that the problem came from the Kingston card and the 8-in-1 reader, but I even had the same problem with a brand spankin’ new Sandisk card and reader.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.  I’ll follow-up this post when I figure out what the problem is.

Cheers!  (why did I just type that??)
